Bauhaus School of Architecture & Design


Bauhaus Screening Notes:
(an inspiring fight)
  • Named after small German town
  •  It had an inspiring focal point of many revolutionary design ideas of the 20th century

Different from any other technical school. Simply, Bauhaus found ways of dealing with life/art on an aesthetic level, which played a unique roll in this era. 

Walter Gropius- the idea of 
Bauhaus: 

  • fought in WWI
  • He believed in an Utopian idea
  • longed for a world where machine was tamed by man
Bauhaus offered unique type of training (artist and craftsman):
  • hands-on students training to first understand how to use tools/machinery 
  •  then how to design their own work
Bauhaus Staff:Paul Clay, Yohanus Itum and Kandinsky among the Bauhaus staff
  • Kandinsky- invented abstract painting
    •  he painted what he felt (a visual language)
  • Yohanus- metaphysical dreamer
    •  responsible for compulsory foundation course
Bauhaus- Radical & Rebellious art student:
  • First time design had been taught in a coherent context
  • Emphasis on individual student on feelings and thought
    • a freedom of expression
  • Invented the modern art student
  • Color and scientific laws
  • Theater workshop- an expression of various arts
    • one of the most important features
    • architecture, costumes, texture, etc
  • Women were enrolled
    • Though, they were directed to work more in fabric/sewing instead of metal & glass work
House am Horne:
  • experimental house on economic/modern 
  • a Bauhaus experimental house created for working class
    • changing man into a better being
    • storage, organization, and management 
  • intended to be mass produced
  • created from prefabricated parts
  • furnished by Bauhaus crafts
Bauhaus- closed in Weimar:
  • In 1925, Bauhaus reopened in Dessau
    • had much richer economy
    • seemed to be a natural home for Bauhaus
    • new Bauhaus extremely plain- huge laboratory 
    • Bauhaus created all materials and furniture for Bauhaus
    • Photography became a new art communication
    • Graphic Design, advertising, and Typography
    • banned serifs from typeface
    • had an architectural department
      • international style
  • Bauhaus lasted 14 years; died in Germany:
    • Berlin was the last place of Bauhaus
    • April 11, 1933 
    • Chicago shows design qualities of Bauhaus
    • students spread ideals worldwide
